Getting Varosha back on track

In 2013, a bicommunal effort began with a vision for an integrated, sustainable and environmentally responsible Famagusta. The group documented core environmental principles and initiatives in an attempt to raise awareness about options and opportunities that exist to bring peace and understanding to one of Cyprus’ most unique locations.

Known as the Famagusta Ecocity Project, over 60 scientists and professionals from both sides of the divide came together under nine panels to provide ideas and suggestions that culminated an extensive pool of data. The vision was brought together on paper through an architectural workshop carried out by post-graduate students.

The project’s abiding principle from the outset has been one of cohesion and inclusiveness: “We are pursuing the answers to the local questions of Cyprus and, specifically, of Famagusta.”
