Bulgaria support efforts for a Cyprus settlement

The Ambassador of Bulgaria in Cyprus, Hristo Georgiev, has reaffirmed his country`s steadfast support to efforts for a Cyprus settlement, on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions.

Georgiev, who was received on Tuesday by House President, Demetris Syllouris, also thanked the latter for the excellent cooperation and the excellent parliamentary relations between Cyprus and Bulgaria.

On his part, Syllouris expressed his appreciation for the stance of principles which Bulgaria maintains as regards the settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Georgiev congratulated Syllouris for his election as President of the House of Representatives and wished him every success to his work. Moreover he conveyed a letter of congratulations from the Speaker of the Bulgarian National Assembly, Tsetska Tsacheva.
Syllouris and Georgiev also exchanged views on the political situation in the broader region.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci, have been engaged in UN-led talks since May last year, with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
