The fortified town of old Famagusta is rich with antiquities and churches and an attraction for visitors.
Over the years, civil society organisations have been consistently calling for more contributions for the historical centre’s preservation.

They say nothing has been done and the antiquities of the region are falling into decay. The organisations claim the local council are spectators to the whole thing.

A recent report in Havadis took a tour of old Famagusta, which is tucked inside a modern city of close to 69,000 people. According to the report, some 200 buildings—reflecting Byzantine, French Gothic and Italian Renaissance architectural styles— are in a state of disrepair.
