UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has received the letters sent to him by President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, a UN official has confirmed.
Replying to questions UN Deputy Spokesman Ferhan Haq also reiterated that the Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide will be visiting Cyprus, Greece and Turkey soon.
Asked on whether there is an update on the letter sent to Ban Ki-moon by Eroglu Haq confirmed that “we have received the letter from Dervis Eroglu, so I can confirm that, we have also received a letter from Nicos Anastasiades”.
Referring to Eide`s activities he recalled that he met with the Secretary General on Thursday.
“We have a note that we made available to correspondents about that particular meeting and as it points out they did discuss the latest developments in Cyprus and the immediate region and of course the note also mentions that the Special Adviser will visit Cyprus as well as Turkey and Greece”, he said.
He added that “we will provide any further details as that trip proceeds”.
Turkish seismic exploration vessel `Barbaros` entered Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on Monday. The move comes a few days after Turkey issued a maritime order (NAVTEX) for the area. This prompted President Nicos Anastasiades to suspend his participation in the UN backed negotiations which aim to reunify the island under a federal roof.
