North Cyprus is not a breakaway country that earned its independence from an oppressor thanks to the struggle of its people. North Cyprus is the offspring of the rape of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey. North Cyprus has been created by Turkish invasion, ethnic cleansing and colonization that has undermined the very existence of Turkish Cypriots themselves, the people who is supposedly protected. There are actually more Turkish Cypriots residing outside of North Cyprus, the vast majority of whom have left after 1974, and within North Cyprus, the Turkish Cypriots make up about 30% of the total population. If I were a Turkish Cypriot, I wouldn’t have anything to celebrate about.
