Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey received Mr. Eide, UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser to Cyprus, on October 28, 2014
During the meetings, recent developments relating to Cyprus were discussed. Special Adviser Mr. Eide stated that he is still optimistic for finding a solution to such a long-running problem like Cyprus and that a solution will not be reached unless issues were discussed around the negotiating table. Special Adviser Mr. Eide added that the Cyprus issue, already involving problems from several dimensions has become even more complex due to the hydrocarbon issue that has come into question.
Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu stated that Turkey still maintains a strong resolve towards the resolution of the Cyprus issue will sustain its constructive approach to the issue. Foreign Minister underlined that Greek Cypriots’ drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean while negotiations continue contradicts the spirit of the negotiations. FM Çavuşoğlu underlined that Turkish Cypriots have equal rights on the natural resources in the Mediterranean and Turkey rejects the unilateral steps taken by the Greek Cypriot Administration.
Furthermore, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu emphasized that Turkey will continue to support UN’s contribution to the negotiation process, and that both Greece and The Greek Cypriot Administration should demonstrate the same political will and stated that the window of opportunity regarding a comprehensive solution in Cyprus will not stay open indefinitely.
