The United Cyprus – Bicommunal Peace Initiative held a protest at the Lokmaci crossing today. The protest began with a joint ribbon and human chain started off by Turkish Cypriot Huseyin Akansoy and Greek Cypriot Petros Suppuris, who both lost loved ones in 1974.

Placards with the words ‘Solution now’, ‘Negotiations now’ were held by TCs and GCs who began their walk from the GC side to the TC side of the border. The Turkish Cypriot police told the protestors however that they could not carry out a protest in a military controlled zone. An argument broke out between the protestors and police before scuffles broke out.

Meanwhile Foreign Minister Ozdil Nami who was crossing to the south through Lokmaci crossing point spoke with the Nicosia police chief Barbaros Savasci, who was also there and told protestors that demonstrations were prohibited at military controlled zones. Some of the protestors reacted to Nami. The organisers of the protest then proceeded to cut the ribbons they had joined together with a knot and tied them to their heads before crossing into the north. Once across the checkpoint, the ribbons were joined together again.
