The leader of the Social Democratic Party Cemal Özyiğit has said that the only way Turkish Cypriots could become part of international law was through a solution.
In a written statement issued today, Özyiğit said that there was a need to build a new order in Cyprus which safeguarded the legitimate rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriots.
Pointing out that Turkish Cypriots had suffered great injustices over the years on various issues as a result of the non-solution of the Cyprus Problem and because they had been left out of international law, the TDP leader said that the only way to fix this was through a political settlement on the island.
Stating that the positive atmosphere achieved in the talks was disturbing various circles in the country, Özyiğit said that there groups were deliberately spreading speculative reports particularly on the property issue to create confusion and strike fear into the hearts of the people.
“These attempts are only aimed at creating fear since the two sides have not even started to discuss the criteria related to property” he said.
Özyiğit also reminded that the rights of the current users of the properties in dispute would be protected, as President Akıncı noted earlier.
