Turkey should decide whether to continue its invasive and expansionary politics, or if will finally compromise with the idea of a Cyprus solution, that will restore conditions of security and stability in Eastern Mediterranean and that will also lift any obstacles towards Turkey`s European orientation GC House Speaker Yiannakis Omirou stressed on Saturday.
Speaking in Paphos, House Speaker noted that this is exactly why the Greek Cypriot side should mobilize internationally and within the EU, so that to exercise pressure and to reclaim possibilities for exercising influence on Turkey.
Omirou recognised that election of Mustafa Akinci in the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community, has created a positive climate and expectations as it concerned resumed negotiations, noting at the same time that the truth is that the decisive role for a solution is up to Turkey.
He also said that the Greek Cypriot side should undertake initiatives on the vital issue of security, indicating that a solution with guarantees and guarantor powers is unthinkable.
“Guarantees have been a source of malaise for Cyprus. They should be abolished once and for all. UN and EU membership composes an adequate guarantees framework” he pointed out.
He also called on the EU to undertake its responsibilities towards the issue of occupation of an EU member state by another country that wants to become a member of the European family.
