The United Nations have set about putting an ambitious target in place to have the Cyprus problem solved within one year, with much emphasis being put on a possible meeting between President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot Leader Mustafa Akinci in New York.
According to Phileleftheros, sources close to the UN are looking to implement a broad timetable – which will see cooperation and support from other nations – beginning with the upcoming first talks later this month and concluding after what diplomats say will be a crucial gathering in the US.
The aim of the first talks will be to thrash out the groundwork so that a preliminary deal can be struck by September in New York, that would see both leaders committed to a high-level joint communique by the time they arrive back in Cyprus.
Coincidentally, both men will be in New York for two totally different reasons……………..
