We referred to it as a peace operation but indeed this was a war. Some of us in Cyprus lost our loved ones. Thousands of us had to go through the trauma of being displaced in our own country…

When I first uttered this the other day, the Greek Cypriot press referred to it as a “confession”. It is not. It is the reality. I have always been saying it and I’m not going to change my views just because I’ve been elected to this position.

In fact, the real confession is what was published by the Cyprus Mail the other day, revealing the fact that Nicos Sampson received 15.000 letters of congratulations in the 3 days following the coup d’état.

What should also be noted is that in between the two Turkish military operations in 1974, an offer by the Turkish side for a federal Cyprus had been rejected. Had this offer been accepted by the Greek Cypriot side back then, so many thousands of Cypriots wouldn’t have had to go through the pain of displacement…
