We Unite in Action for Peace! International Day of Action for Peace
This year’s Day of Action for Peace on 1st of September finds us on a most promising juncture for the Solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our country. Remembering the millions of victims of Nazism and fascism 70 years after the end of the Second World War reinforces our will to stand united as a bi-communal movement to help end this 50 year old conflict. Our main aim is to fight for a peaceful world where wars, mass migrations and suffering does not exist. For this reason, we respond positively to this year’s call from the Trade Union members of WFTU (PEO, DEV-IS, KTOS, KTOEOS, KTAMS, BES, KOOP-SEN) inviting all organizations to come together to send a resounding message that the Solution and Reunification of our country constitutes our highest priority.
The declared common vision is clear and unambiguous. The negotiations have entered their most critical phase and the two leaders continue to demonstrate their common will to find ways to progress towards this vision. We support and salute this will. However, we also know that, only if the civil society on both sides of the divide, who believe in the unification of Cyprus and the fraternity of all, continue to work together and reinforce their actions, can there be a solution that is sustainable and accepted by all.
In this light, let us then unite in action for peace and progressively develop and expand our movement. Let us emphasize how peace achieved in Cyprus can be an example for the region and the rest of the world.
1. On 1st September we will gather at Ledra Palace buffer zone in front of the Home of Cooperation in a broad open action for supporting all efforts for achieving and enhancing peace.
2. On the 18th September we will gather at the Chetinkayia football pitch in the buffer zone for an outstanding cultural event with Zulfu Livaneli and Maria Farantouri, which would enrich our cultural cooperation and contribute positively to our common struggle.
