Demopoulos case constitutes a turning point on the property issue

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (10.09.15) under the front-page title: “The rights of the current user of property will be protected as well”, publishes a report by journalist Emine Davut Yitmen, who writes that during the discussions on the property issue which are taking place at the current stage of the Cyprus negotiation talks, the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in 2010 on the Demopoulos case, is evaluated as a turning point.

According to the ECHR’ decision on the Demopoulos case, besides the rights of the owner of the property prior to 1974, the rights of the current user of property will also be protected.
Yitmen supports that during the discussion on the property issue, together with the rights of the current user of the property, the issue whether the owner of the property will be preferential against the user of the property, is expected to be discussed at the talks.
