What helped Cypriots survive on this island through centuries of turmoil and conflict, either man-made or natural, was their ability to learn each time from their own experience and adapt accordingly.
And this applies to Greek Cypriots who place claims of thousands of years of history on the island and also to the Turkish Cypriots who see this place as their home. They have always been able to absorb the lessons of history and look forward, leaving the past in the past. They never forgot the past, they learnt from it but they never allowed it to determine their future. Survival as a people, was always far more important than temporary victories and scoring points against each other.
