Nicosia is waiting to see the next move of newly-elected Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci who is only expected to act upon his return to Cyprus from Ankara.
According to diplomatic sources, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan doesn’t want any movement on the Cyprus problem until Akinci visits Turkey – in what will be his first visit abroad since being elected in the Turkish occupied north of the island.
All those involved in negotiations on the Cyprus problem are said to be waiting with bated breath as to what tune he will play once he rounds off his visit in Ankara. Turkey has already intervened on negotiations since Akinci’s election and subsequent hard-line stance against Erdogan, according to the same sources in Phileleftheros.
